Landscape Design and Construction Overview: Enea Landscape Architecture
The Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena marks one of the most significant hospitality developments in the Colombian Caribbean, and a landmark project within Enea Landscape Architecture’s international portfolio.
From the outset, Enea was entrusted with shaping a landscape concept capable of uniting a highly complex architectural ensemble spanning several centuries. Set across historic structures, from a 16th-century cloister to early 20th-century buildings, alongside contemporary additions, the project called for a landscape approach that would not dominate, but connect, structure, and elevate the entire experience.
Landscape as the Connecting Layer
At the heart of the project lies Enea’s core philosophy: a deep respect for place and a commitment to enhancing its inherent qualities.
In Cartagena, this translated into a system of lush tropical gardens, courtyards, and living corridors that seamlessly link the different buildings and guide through the property. The landscape becomes the spatial backbone, structuring circulation, framing views, and creating a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior.
Rather than imposing a signature aesthetic, the design is deliberately restrained to allow the architecture, history, and atmosphere of Cartagena to remain at the forefront.
Climate, Culture and Ecology
Enea’s approach is deeply informed by Cartagena’s tropical climate and rich biodiversity. Shade, vegetation, and airflow are carefully orchestrated to create comfortable microclimates, transforming outdoor spaces into livable environments throughout the day.
Planting strategies prioritize native and adaptive species, supporting local flora and fauna while reinforcing a strong sense of permanence and authenticity. The result is a landscape that is not only atmospheric, but also performative and resilient.
Equally important is the integration of local knowledge and craftsmanship. Developed in close collaboration with regional partners and specialists, the project reflects a shared understanding of materials, techniques, and ecological conditions to ensure that the landscape feels inherently connected to its context.
A Landmark Project
More than a hotel landscape, the project represents a holistic approach, where landscape plays a defining role in the overall guest experience.
By weaving together history, architecture, and nature, Enea has created a project that stands as a benchmark for context-driven design in complex heritage settings, and a lasting contribution to Cartagena’s identity.
