Residential
Planning: 2020
Completion: 2022
Project Location: Switzerland
Projekt Type: Private garden
Landscape Architecture: Enea Landscape Architecture
The project transforms an existing residential property into a layered, park-like landscape where architecture, vegetation, and art enter into a carefully composed spatial dialogue. Complementing the existing residence, a pavilion and an additional structure were integrated into the overall composition and connected through a precisely designed landscape.
Landscape as Spatial Framework
The garden was conceived as a landscape that balances openness and intimacy. Generous spaces, strategically placed trees and shrubs, and a restrained use of hard surfaces create a strong sense of privacy while maintaining visual openness.
A defining feature of the project is a collection of Japanese maples displayed in sandstone planters, carefully positioned within expansive planting areas. The composition is complemented by mature pine trees, layered shrub planting, and a rich mix of perennials and grasses that provide structure and seasonal variation throughout the year.
Materiality, Art, and Atmosphere
The material palette follows a restrained and precise design language. Large paved surfaces in Bollinger sandstone are softened through densely planted thyme joints, creating a subtle interplay between solid surfaces and vegetation.
A further key aspect of the project is the integration of a sculpture by Barry Flanagan, whose placement was defined in close collaboration with Enzo Enea and the client. Art is not treated as an addition, but as an integral component of the spatial composition.
Design Through Dialogue
The project evolved through a close dialogue between client, planning, and construction teams. Throughout the process, the design was continuously refined and carefully adapted to evolving spatial and functional requirements.
Particular attention was given to the sensitive handling of the existing tree population, as well as the integration of new programmes and outdoor spaces into the overall composition. Selected trees were temporarily relocated and later reintegrated into the landscape concept.
The close collaboration between all parties involved ensured a precise execution and contributed significantly to the project’s spatial and atmospheric quality.
